Assignments
- PREPARATION AND PARTICIPATION: You will come to class prepared, having done the assigned reading (or viewing) for the day. You participate in class discussion and offer generative comments and questions to the group. You will be actively present in class and participate in class activities, including in-class written activities. (20%)
- QUIZZES: There will be 10 graded quizzes related to the readings and discussion topics throughout the semester. Students who are late or absent for a quiz will receive zero points. No make-ups are allowed. The lowest score will be dropped. (10%)
- AT-HOME ASSIGNMENTS: Throughout the semester, you will prepare occasional written or creative assignments at home. These include: an end-of-unit short playwriting assignment, an end-of-unit short performance assignment, and a review of at least one theatrical production (30%)
- GROUP DIRECTOR PRESENTATION: You will work collaboratively with a small group of 3-4 peers to research and present on an assigned theatre director to research. Presentations might include information about their background, directing style(s), methods of working with performers, production history, and/or reception by the public/critics. The presentation must include visual images of the director’s work. Your group’s presentation should be approximately 15 minutes long. You will turn in an electronic portfolio to Google Drive including 1) an outline of your presentation, 2) any accompanying visuals, and 3) a summary of each group member’s contribution. (15%)
- CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE FINAL EXAM: For your final exam, you will choose from a provided list of theatrical traditions, styles, theories, or issues. Write/prepare a proposal for the production of a play of your choice that would draw upon, illustrate, and/or encourage conversation about that tradition, style, theory, or issue.
Your proposal should include all aspects that go into a theatrical production that we will be discussing over the course of the semester, including 1) the dramatic text, 2) directing and acting, 3) design (set design, light, sound, costume), and 4) societal significance. In your proposal you must describe and justify how each of your choices of dramatic text, directing and acting style, and design collectively illustrate your chosen tradition, style, theory, or issue. This assignment is both conceptual and creative. It will require some outside research, but also (and perhaps most importantly) your imagination.
The final format of this assignment can be EITHER an 8-10 page written paper OR a 10-15 minute visual presentation (such as a power-point or video) that you will narrate with discussion at the end of the semester. (25%)
Grading
Your final grade for this course will be calculated as follows:
