CLASS & COLLEGE POLICIES
Readings and Course Materials:
This course is designed to be a no-cost textbook course rooted in critical and open pedagogical practices. All the materials for the class are available through links on the syllabus, including scripts, essays and theory, primary source documents, videos, and other Open Educational Resources.
Assignment Submission:
We will use Blackboard for assignments and grading. All assignments should be submitted electronically on Blackboard on the date it is due. The one exception is the final, which will be emailed directly to the professor.
Latework & Rewrites:
We are all human and sometimes human things happen. That said, I accept late work in extenuating circumstances only. All written assignments should be placed in the appropriate Google Drive folder at the latest before class on the day they are due. If you will be turning in an assignment late, you must email me to let me know. Late assignments will be docked a letter grade per day after the due date. I encourage you to rewrite assignments (as long as they were turned in on time) after receiving your grade if you would like to improve your grade; it is your responsibility to contact me if you wish to do so. This policy applies to individual assignments only. Group work will not be accepted late.
Attendance Policy:
Prompt and consistent attendance is absolutely essential for success in this course. The department’s policy states that you are allowed up to three absences during the semester. After the third absence, your grade will be lowered one full letter grade for each additional absence. A becomes a B; B- becomes a C-, etc. Coming late or leaving early counts as one-half of an absence. You are late if you arrive after 11:10am. Six absences will result in automatic failure of the class. See Page 66 of the Undergraduate Bulletin for state law regarding nonattendance due to religious beliefs: http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/web/off_registrar/2017-2018_Undergraduate_Bulletin.pdf.
Brooklyn College Policy on Academic Integrity:
The faculty and administration of Brooklyn College support an environment free from cheating and plagiarism. Each student is responsible for being aware of what constitutes cheating and plagiarism and for avoiding both. The complete text of the CUNY Academic Integrity Policy and the Brooklyn College procedure for policy implementation can be found at www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/bc/policies. If a faculty member suspects a violation of academic integrity and, upon investigation, confirms that violation, or if the student admits the violation, the faculty member MUST report the violation. Students should be aware that faculty may use plagiarism detection software. Bottom line: Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you have any questions about the above policy within the context of this course, please bring them to me.
Accessibility:
Please let me know about any triggers, disabilities, or resources you may require. If you feel like you are falling behind for any reason, talk to me; otherwise, I will assume all is well. If you need disability-related academic accommodations, please schedule a time to meet with me to discuss them privately.
Center for Student Disability Services:
In order to receive disability-related academic accommodations students must first be registered with the Center for Student Disability Services. Students who have a documented disability or suspect they may have a disability are invited to set up an appointment with the Director of the Center for Student Disability Services, Ms. Valerie Stewart-Lovell at (718) 951-5538 or [email protected]. If you have already registered with the Center for Student Disability Services, please provide your professor with the course accommodation form and discuss your specific accommodation with him/her.
